Moby Dick and Irrational Hatred

Published November 14 in 1851

“All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby Dick.”

The whale wasn’t really all that Ahab made him out to be. The whale was just a whale, but it became the target of all of the Captain’s pent up frustration and rage. It ‘became’ what Ahab made it to be, what he ‘needed’ it to become, and yet… it remained still a whale.

People are not whales or inanimate objects fit for your projection. People are not meant for your frustrations to ‘make them’ into demons or targets for your rage or scapegoats for your losses.

Another Tolerant Progressive Fascist attacking someone with a different opinion, for having a different opinion.

Labeling and calling names on everyone who didn’t vote the way you wanted them to does nothing to understand why they voted as they did. And it only continues, encourages and whips up more of the type of irrational hatred that you say you are trying to stop.

I can’t speak for everyone and say that no one voted for a Trump was racist, sexist or Homophobic. But I can say for myself that none of those were the reasons I didn’t vote for Hillary. I didn’t vote for Trump either by the way.

And of course this nutcase physically assaulting someone with a differing POV as ‘performance art’ while protesting Trump for daring to try and counter protest.

I can say that it is irrational hatred and bigotry of the worst kind for people to say that everyone who voted for Trump or didn’t vote for Hillary did so because they were racist, sexist and Homophobic. This type of rhetoric does nothing but incite violence and perpetuate the type of irrational hatred for others that Ahab had for a simple whale.

“Yes, I am angry,” Madonna said. “Yes, I am outraged. Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.”

But now she says she’s not a violent woman…

It has to stop. This is not what democracy looks like. This is what Fascism looks like. Punishing people for not thinking, voting or acting like you want them to vote. It’s childish and politically dangerous.

When we disagree, we don’t start out calling names or assuming racism, Sexism, or Homophobia. We talk. We exchange ideas. We understand first, then seek to be understood. That’s what adults do. That’s what Democracies do.

  • Go High (like Mrs Obama said)
  • Go Forward (like President Obama said)
  • Because we are Stronger Together (like Hillary said)
  • Because it would be ‘horrifying’ not to accept the results of our free election in a Democracy (like Hillary said)

Or you can keep beating on a Whale as if he’s there to be beaten. But both the choice and responsibility are yours. Just remember, People are not there for you to beat on and they are not ‘one size fits all’ to shoe horn into your projected narrative for your frustration and rage.

Don’t be Ahab. Be better than Ahab, please. For the sake of our Country and Democracy.

  1. KIA, your intentions behind this post are honorable, but I doubt it will have much effect. This election was disturbing (to say the least) for many, many people and it’s going to take awhile for things to settle down … if they ever do.
